Sun has released GNOME 2.0 Desktop for the Solaris OE

Sun has released Sun Ray Server Software version 2.0.
New features include: The ability to deploy Sun Ray thin clients on existing Local Area Network infrastructure, 128 bit Encryption of Sun Ray traffic, Improved diagnostics for remote management, Support for Solaris Smart Card Framework Middleware APIs. Solaris 9 Data Encryption Supplement 1.0.1
The Solaris Encryption Kit contains encryption algorithms (AES (128, 192, and 256-bit key lengths) for IPsec Blowfish (32 to 448-bit key lengths, in 8-bit increments) for IPsec). The Encryption Kit contains kernel modules which implement various forms of encryption for IPsec, utilities for encrypting files from the command line, and libraries with functions that are called by application programs for encryption.

Sun to release Solaris 9 for x86
Sun is planning to release the previously "deferred" Solaris 9 for x86 processors. The expected launch date of the product is December 2002 (12/02). The software will cost $99.- or a single processor machine. There will be a $20.- "Early Access" version that can be downloaded for testing. Sun has officially released StarOffice 6.0:
"StarOffice software is an affordable alternative in office productivity suites that runs on multiple operating systems, including Solaris[tm] Operating Environment, Microsoft Windows, and Linux. The office suite has a simple, easy-to-use interface and contains full-featured applications including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, graphics and database capabilities."

Sun has released a patch that adds /dev/random and /dev/urandom for Solaris 8: Patch-ID# 112438-01, Keywords: security random number generator PRNG, Synopsis: SunOS 5.8: /kernel/drv/random patch, Date: Mar/28/2002


On 14th of March 2002 Sun Microsystems announced it's newest workstation - The Sun Blade[tm] 2000 [pdf]. Designed to help meet the needs of power users, researchers, designers, and programmers in technical computing environments - the Sun Blade 2000 workstation comes with a wide array of powerful components in a balanced architecture.

The Solaris 9 OE Customer Early Access software is not suitable for deployment on any production systems, offered with minimal support and supplied as-is. It is only available for the SPARC platform. The release of the IA-32 platform version of Solaris 9 OE is deferred at this time. You can also check out what's new in this Solaris release and the beta documentation. Sun Microsystems has officially released Netscape[tm] 4.78 for the Solaris[tm] Operating Environment. Grab your copy now. Installation instructions also available.

Solaris[tm] 9 Operating Environment Developer Early Access Program
Solaris[tm] 9, build 41 Developer Early Access software is now available for download. This Early Access (beta-quality) release of the Solaris 9 Operating Environment is being made available to those who accept the licensing terms to download, install, and test. This software is not suitable for deployment on any production systems.

Solaris[tm] 9 Operating Environment documentation can be found at docs.sun.com. Username and password to access the documentation is provided if you agree to the terms of the license agreement that Sun provides.

StarOffice 6.0[tm] Beta
is available for download from Sun's official web site. The new version includes support for XML file formats, Asian language support, improved Microsoft Office file compatibility, and ease-of-use enhancements. You can also get the StarOffice[tm] software source code at OpenOffice.org

GNU GCC 3.0.1 compiler suite (GNU C/C++/FORTRAN/Java/Objective C) has been released on August 25, 2001. You can download source code or precompiled binaries from the Solaris 8 section.

Solaris XFree86 Video Drivers and Porting Kit
The Solaris[TM] XFree86[TM] Video Drivers and Porting Kit enables you to use XFree86 video drivers with the X Window System server for Solaris 8 Intel Platform Edition or for Solaris 9 Intel Platform Edition and expands the number of video devices that work with Solaris on Intel platforms.

Solaris[tm] Live Upgrade 2.0 has been released for the Solaris[tm] 8, 7 and 2.6 Operating Environments, SPARC[tm] and Intel Platform Editions. The Solaris[tm] Live Upgrade 2.0 Guide is available via docs.sun.com.

Sun has released Solaris[tm] Security Toolkit 0.3 on June 18, 2001. It supports the following Solaris Operating Environment releases: Solaris 2.5.1, 2.6, 7, 8 - SPARC[tm] Platform Edition and Solaris 2.5.1, 2.6, 7, 8 - Intel Platform Edition.
