CD-ROM Updater Beta Sample Description and Precautions The "CdRmUpdt.exe" program is a utility to upgrade the firmware of the TEAC Standard CD-ROM drives and Multi CD-R drive ( CD-P520E ). IMPORTANT Please carefully read the License Agreement displayed on the first page when the "CdRmUpdt.exe" program is launched. If you do not agree, click the "CANCEL" button. Operating Environment * Windows 95 OSR2.x (OEM Service Release 2.x) or Windows 98 * SCSI Card if CD-5XXS is used(Adaptec AHA-2940 series recommended) Updater instruction 1. Copy "CdRmUpdt.exe", "PROGRESS.avi", and the binary files (*.bin) into the same directory on your hard disk. Be sure to use a vacant directory so that previously extracted binary files or executable files do not interfere with operation. 2. If a disk is in the drive, remove it, then close the drive. 3. Launch "CdRmUpdt.exe". Carefully read the License Agreement description. If you agree, click the "Next" button. If you do not agree, click the "Cancel" button to cancel the F/W update. 4. The "Update" button becomes valid only if the CD-ROM drive is connected to your PC that needs to be updated. Note: Never turn off the power while the firmware is been updating. Quit all other programs before running the update to ensure that no other program tries to access the drive and to free up memory. If sufficient memory is not available, the program will not run. Never interrupt the power supply to the computer or the drive while the firmware is been updating, being re-written, (including force quit with CTRL+ALT+DEL or task quit by ALT+F4). Do not load or unload the drive while the program is running. Click the "Update" button to start the firmware updating operation. 5. When "Updated successfully" is displayed, you must reboot the computer. After the message "Restart the computer" is displayed, be sure to click the "OK" button to reboot the computer. If operation is continued without rebooting the computer, the system may freeze or crash.(This is the reason why TEAC strongly recommends the user to back-up hard disk before the F/W update to protect their important data.) Note: If the computer freezes during the updating operation, wait for about 5 minutes before turning the computer OFF. Notes: 1. The "CdRmUpdt.exe" program uses the ASPI manager supplied with the Windows 95 system for both IDE and SCSI drives. If the ASPI manager is not present, or if the contents of the ASPI manager have been changed by the installation of a certain type of CD-R writing software or SCSI Card driver, this program may not operate correctly. 2. This utility program checks the names and contents of the files. Never edit or rename the binary files. Be sure the binary files, the "avi" file and the "CdRmUpdt.exe" file are located in the same directory. Also make sure that no previous versions of the binary files or executable files are present in the same directory. See Update instruction item 1. above. 3. Do not start the "CdRmUpdt.exe" program or commence updating when a disk is in loaded the CD-ROM drive. Error Messages "File required for updating not found." Displayed when the firmware (binary file) for updating is not found. When not present in the same directory as "CdRmUpdt.exe". When the contents of the binary file are abnormal. When there are two or more binary files or the binary file has been renamed. When a previous version of the binary file exists (when copied or extracted in the same directory as that previously used). "Firmware updating failed." Displayed when firmware updating failed. "Unable to keep memory!" ("Not enough memory!") Insufficient memory is available to run the updating program properly. Quit all other applications to free more memory. "No ASPI for WIN32 support detected." The ASPI manager for this utility cannot be found. Re-installation of Windows 98/95 may be required. "Caution: ASPI cannot maintain 64KB memory..." The ASPI manager used by this system cannot maintain a continuous memory of 64KB. Appearance of this warning can be related to the type of SCSI card driver.
