it would be nice if that page made a clearer distinction between X desktop
dimensions (controlled directly by utxconfig, only indirectly affected by
utresadm) and the characteristics of the video signal that is driven to the
monitor (controlled directly by utresadm, only indirectly affected by
utxconfig).

Use utxconfig to do that.  See
