I just checked a couple of my machines and there seems to be a R missing
from the variable you show:
SUNWUTETC=${SUNWUTR}/etc/opt/SUNWut
with SUNWUTR being set like this:
SUNWUTR=$(/etc/opt/SUNWut/basedir/lib/utprodinfo -r SUNWutr)
I wonder how the R got dropped from both?
This expands to "/"
Making SUNWUTETC default to /etc/opt/SUNWut
